Free Schools and Academies – An Education
Posted on November 4, 2011 | No CommentsOver the past year, the Coalition government has been instrumental in expanding academies and free schools throughout the country and with 24 free schools opening this year alone and over 203 academies currently in existence, it begs the question of what actually are free schools and academies and what do they mean for education in Britain? Free schools, a flagship policy of the Education Secretary Michael Gove, can be set up by groups of parents or teachers for example, but are funded directly by central government and because they are independent of local authorities, they have increased freedom over the curriculum. The main aim of free schools being to meet demand in areas where there are shortages of places for pupils from impoverished backgrounds and to promote better standards within school through competition.
