Many viewers are keen to see Lord Sugar compete for votes in the weekly televised show.

Labour has announced plans to elect the House of Lords through a nationwide ‘Lords Got Talent’ contest.

Contestants in each major town and city would be whittled down through a number of heats in front of a live audience, before ten finalists compete for text votes in televised weekly shows.

A party spokesperson said the plans also form a key part of Labour’s deficit reduction scheme.

“Just look how rich Simon Cowell has become by wringing money from people who have nothing better to do with their lives than watch TV talent shows.

“If all of that money went to the Treasury we wouldn’t have to cut nearly as much. Plus a shiny talent show would distract people from any cuts we do make.”

The spokesperson said all three main party leaders will form a judging panel alongside a celebrity judge.

“We’re currently trying to get Piers Morgan on board, as he’s the only person we can think of who makes the politicians look likeable.”
